Jolly Holiday

For this project, I chose to animate a one-minute segment from the classic film Mary Poppins, specifically focusing on the song "Jolly Holiday." My animation drew inspiration from a scene in the film, which I referenced in a YouTube clip: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFGdlSbJAUE .

The original scene in Mary Poppins features a whimsical countryside setting where the landscape is animated while the characters are portrayed by live actors. I decided to reinterpret this concept by setting my animation on rooftops, drawing from the film’s “chimney sweep” scene.

In my version, the animation primarily features Mary Poppins and Bert, with Bert as the focal character. The setting is a dynamic rooftop landscape, blending elements of the classic animated charm with a fresh, elevated perspective. I aimed to capture the playful and enchanting essence of the original scene while adding a unique twist through the rooftop environment.

To achieve this, I employed a range of animation techniques and tools. I designed and modeled the rooftops to create a visually engaging backdrop that complements the characters’ movements and the song’s lively rhythm. I utilized keyframe animation in my chosen software to ensure smooth, fluid motion and to synchronize the animation with the musical elements of "Jolly Holiday."

Throughout the process, I focused on maintaining the vibrant, whimsical quality of the original scene while integrating my creative vision. The animation required a careful balance of character expression, background design, and musical synchronization to create a cohesive and captivating clip.

The project was a rewarding challenge that allowed me to apply and refine my animation skills, including character animation, scene composition, and timing. It also provided an opportunity to explore creative storytelling through animation, contributing to a fresh interpretation of a beloved classic.
